1930s

In the 1930s Bury Times cartoonist Ben Crawshaw would regularly poke fun at sportsmen and women of the day, more often than not concentrating on the exploits of the Shakers down at Gigg Lane. On this occasion he takes the mickey out of Greenmount CC stalwart Dick Scholes during the ‘derby’ clash with Brooksbottom.

Thanks to Andrew Ingamells for this photograph of his mother Marion Butterworth when she was rose queen of Greenmount Church in 1936. At that time, the rose queen celebrations ended with a get-together on the cricket field. Interestingly, this picture shows how the field extended to level with Whispering Corner cottages, long before the Log Cabin clubhouse was built.
