The finale to the cricket season is almost upon us with just two rounds of matches remaining for out senior teams.

The first eleven – led by Travis Townsend – need only one point from Sunday’s home encounter with Church on 7th September to be fittingly crowned JW Lees Lancashire League Division Two champions.

Promotion has already been secured for Premier League cricket at The Mount next summer.

In the meantime, Oli Dixon’s second eleven travel to Church needing to secure a win to ensure a hat-trick of promotions for all three senior teams.

Mark Crowther’s third eleven have already been confirmed as Second Division winners in their respective competition which means all three Greenmount teams will play in top tier competition next season.

A remarkable achievement and there’s bound to be a celebratory atmosphere on Sunday.

A two-wicket victory at Nelson on Sunday has left Greenmount’s first eleven needing just a solitary point to clinch the JWL Lancashire League Division Two title.

Amal Dalugoda… Five wickets

Winning the toss and electing to field, the Mount dismissed their hosts for 167 with Amal Dalugoda in fine form with the ball finishing with figures of 5 for 38.

Pursuing a revised target of 159 from 42 overs due to the rain, professional Jacques Snyman blasted 70 from 36 balls with ten fours and two sixes. The innings took him past 3,000 Lancashire League runs in an opening stand of 94 with Ton Heaton (29).

Cameron Mapstone, with an unbeaten 18, saw the villagers over the line in the 34th over.

Sam Greenhalgh… 54 not out

The second team continued their fine run of results with a nine-wicket success over Walsden seconds at the Log Cabin.

Skipper Oli Dixon won the toss and decided to field then took five wickets for 48 as the visitors were restricted to 163 for 9 from their 40 overs.

In the reply, opener Nigel Franklin retired hurt after six balls so it was left to his opening partner Sam Greenhalgh (54 not out) and Toby Leach (undeaten on 71) to take the seconds to victory and edge closer to a terrific promotion and potentially emulate the firsts and thirds.

GCC Board of Directors

Congratulations to Greenmount CC first eleven who clinched promotion to Division One of the Lancashire League with a resounding 296 run win over Rishton.

Professional  Jacques Snyman hit 135 off 71 balls ably supported by skipper Travis Townsend (94), Andy Kerr (76) and Max Birtwistle (30).

Rishton were blown away for 99 with Cal Hunter taking 6 for 43.

This success caps a great weekend for the club with the third team crowned champions in their division and the second team also winning and lying in second place.

The Greenmount CC first eleven enjoy a well-earned refreshment after securing promotion on Sunday

The summer just gets better and better at Greenmount CC with the news that the club’s ladies rounders team have won promotion to the Bury Ladies Rounders League Division Two.

If that wasn’t enough, they added the prestigious Orr Shield to their list of achievements with a 252-140 victory over rivals GnJ Ladies.

The A team – captained by Heather Crawford – have made steady progress in recent years and have, starting in Division Six, won promotion every season since 2022.

Greenmount Ladies A – promoted to Division Two and Orr Shield winners

Congratulations to Greenmount CC third team who rounded off another great summer by clinching the Second Division championship at Nelson on Saturday.

The team – captained by Mark Crowther – has featured a mainly junior group ably supported by the experience of senior players Wesley Young and Matthew Gilmore.

It’s been a family affair too with the three Clarke brothers Adam, Tom and Ben all featuring alongside Noah and Max Birtwistle.

Father and son duos Liam and Jake Riley and Mark and Dexter Crowther have also enjoyed playing in the same team.

The match at Nelson followed a familiar pattern of the previous nine wins with a strong bowling performance backed by solid batting.

Wesley Young and Max Birtwistle scored half centuries and 15-year-old Ed Cunnington grabbed a hat-trick to crown a superb day.

Congratulations to everyone who has played and helped the group to the title.

Greenmount CC third eleven… JW Lees Lancashire League Third XI Division Two champions

It’s all set to be a busy Bank Holiday weekend at the Log Cabin.

On Saturday (23rd), our third team travel to Nelson for their final league match of the campaign having secured promotion last weekend.

They will be looking for a win to seal the championship title and cap another successful season and would welcome any away support to top the season off.

Meanwhile, at home we are playing hosts to Edgworth second eleven while they have refurbishment work completed on their ground. If you fancy a change and can’t make it up the M65 to see the thirds, Edgworth are playing Daisy Hill first team in the Greater Manchester League. 12.30pm start.

The main event of the weekend is on Sunday (24th) when the first team meet Rishton at home.

Greenmount are 24 points clear at the top of the table with four matches to play and will secure promotion with a win.

This will be the last chance to see professional Jacques Snyman at the Mount before he departs home to South Africa before returning in 2026.

Meanwhile, our second string continue their promotion drive with a trip to Rishton in the reverse fixture.

On Bank Holiday Monday we have ladies cricket at the club with a Cheshire Women’s Cricket League Division One fixture between Leigh CC and Lindow CC. Play starts at 1.30pm.

The club are looking to start our own womens’ and girls’ section for the 2026 season so it would be great to see plenty of support for this fixture.

With that in mind, any girls/women who wish to be involved in a new Greenmount CC womens team starting next summer should contact club chairman Andy Skinner at skinner_a@sky.com with their details and a contact number.

BANK HOLIDAY OPENING

A superb unbeaten innings of 101 in 100 balls from Cameron Mapstone helped blast the first team to the verge of promotion after a 136-run triumph at Great Harwood.

Cameron Mapstone… Superb unbeaten ton

Greenmount captain Travis Townsend won the toss and decided to bat but at 110 for 5 – and with the general consensus that a score of around 250 would be needed for victory – it looked decidedly dodgy for the villagers with both professional Jacques Snyman (57) and Townsend (31) back in the shed.

That was the cue for Mapstone to enter the fray. He added 94 for the sixth wicket with Noah Birtwistle (29) and an unbroken 74 for the seventh wicket with Ishy Patel (33 not out).

A final total of 278 for 6 proved insurmountable for the home side who slid to 144 all out, mainly due to 5 for 30 from Jacques Snyman and 3 for 32 from Amal Dalugoda. Noah Birtwistle took the other two wickets.

During the Greenmount innings skipper Townsend passed 3,000 runs in the Lancashire League while Snyman passed 1,000 runs for the season.

SCOREBOARD

LEAGUE TABLE

Oli Dixon’s second eleven kept their promotion hopes alive with a good four-wicket defeat of Middleton at the Log Cabin.

Matt Donnelly… 89 not out

The visitors were invited to bat in the Greenmount sun and put on 199 all out from 44.4 overs.

Wicket-taker in chief was Max Birtwistle who finished with terrific figures of 6 for 43 from 12 overs with Ryan Edge taking three and Dixon taking one.

The Mount reply was dominated by a superb innings from Matt Donnelly who hit an unbeaten 89.

Donnelly hit 12 fours and three sixes in a swashbuckling display and his seventh wicket partnership of 143 with the ubiquitous Dixon saw the villagers home inside 37 overs.

SCOREBOARD

LEAGUE TABLE

It was a bitter-sweet Saturday afternoon for the third team who – despite losing to Great Harwood by four wickets – ensured they were promoted.

With only one game remaining no other team can dislodge them from the top two positions in the Third XI Division Two table after a great summer.

Noah Birtwistle… 104 not out

Skipper Liam Riley won the toss and elected to bat and he saw Noah Birtwistle hit a fantastic unbeaten 104 that included ten fours and two sixes.

Birtwistle put on 94 for the first wicket with Harry Nuttall who scored a fine 54.

However, the Mount total of 214 for 5 from their 40 overs proved insufficient as Great Harwood skipper Nazakat Hussain’s 96 proved the mainstay of the visitors reply.

The visitors reached their target for the loss of six wickets in the 38th over to inflict a rare defeat.

Leading  the wicket-taking for Greenmount was Ben Clarke with 3 for 31 while there was a wicket apiece for brother Adam Clarke, Noah Birtwistle and Jake Riley.
