First-year anniversary celebrations are over but the team is back to normal opening times with a new menu starting Friday.

It looks like another hot week ahead so why not come down to the club for some relaxation time with a bit of cricket thrown in?

On Saturday, Greenmount’s first eleven suffered a narrow three-run defeat in a thrilling encounter at the Log Cabin against last season’s champions Lowerhouse.

Professional Jacques Snyman once again entertained the sunshine crowd with a superb 66 from just 29 ball and also bagged three wickets.

Meanwhile, veteran campaigner Amal Dalugoda took another four wickets and Cameron Mapstone scored a battling 42 in a much-improved team performance.

Unfortunately, in a game of ebb and flow, Lowerhouse emerged the winners by the slimmest of margins. Nevertheless Mount picked up seven useful points for their efforts.

A much-depleted second team was heavily defeated in the reverse fixture at Lowerhouse.

Chasing a challenging home total of 275 for 4, the Mount were dismissed for 99 with Mitch Franklin top scoring with 25.

The third eleven – away at Littleborough – won for only the second time this season.

Max Birtwistle with 53 runs and figures of 3 for 13 led the way with support from Harry Nuttall (39) and it was nice to see a rare appearance from Chris Sherrington who sealed the win with an unbeaten 25.

UPCOMING FIXTURES

This weekend the third team are at home on Saturday against Lowerhouse while on Sunday the second team entertain Nelson.

The firsts travel to second-placed Walsden on Sunday. With five matches remaining Greenmount have slipped to seventh and will be looking to get back to winning ways to break back into the top half of the table.

The club was saddened to hear the recent death of former player Ted Foster at the age of 90.

Ted was a familiar face on the Greenmount teamsheets during the 1960s, 1970s and into the 1980s with his left arm spin and medium pace bowling.

As well as a fine cricketer, Ted was a top notch table tennis player and a keen amateur footballer.

More recently – prior to his ill health – he would regularly be seen in the Log Cabin meeting up with good friends on a Sunday evening.

All at the club send sincere condolences to Ted’s family and friends.

His funeral service will be held this coming Monday (August 10th) at 3.30pm at East Lancashire Crematorium, Radcliffe.

All three senior Greenmount teams suffered defeat at the weekend.

The first team travelled to Haslingden on Sunday without professional Jacques Snyman as he awaits the birth of their baby.

Roe Green’s Sri Lankan pro Tilly Malshan stood in for Jacques and he top-scored for the Mount with 41, however, their total of 149 all out always seemed insufficient – and so it proved.

Haslingden eased to victory with 152 for 4 inside 29 overs.

HASLINGDEN v GREENMOUNT SCOREBOARD

Meanwhile at the Log Cabin the second eleven went down to a 131-run reverse against Haslingden’s second string.

The visitors racked up a fine score of 325 for 5 with two of their number, Lucas Bargh and Muneeb Ahmed, hitting tons: 156 and 104 respectively.

The villagers’ reply weighed heavily on opener Ryan Senior (70) and while Liam Riley hit a useful 41 it was always a tall order to get anywhere near the target, slumping to 194 all out.

On Saturday the thirds entertained Great Harwood fourths and suffered a calamitous collapse.

Great Harwood put on 258 for 6 for the first innings with Nathan Sheridan hitting 107 for them.

In the reply it was a red letter day for Max Birtwistle who scored 113 for his first senior century, and along with Harry Nuttall (54) and Tom Clarke (27) the Mount looked well set to take the spoils.

However, a dramatic six wickets fell for only seven runs at the tail end of their innings to leave the home side a tantalising eight runs short of victory.

Congratulations to 18-year-old Max Birtwistle on his first senior century.

Max (pictured right) scored 113 for the third eleven in an exciting run chase against Great Harwood fourth team at the Log Cabin on Saturday.

He was well supported by Harry Nuttall (54) in an opening stand of 185.

Unfortunately, after Max was finally dismissed, Greenmount somehow managed to lose the match by seven runs.

Well done Max – first of many!

Greenmount’s first team home game against Littleborough fell foul of the rainy weather on Sunday while the seconds went down in the reverse fixture up at Hare Hill.

In a game reduced to 24 overs a side due to the rain, skipper Oli Dixon won the toss and elected to bat but his side only mustered 61 for 5 at the end of their innings in grim conditions.

Littleborough made short work of that, knocking off 64 for 0 for a ten-wicket triumph inside eight overs.

LITTLEBOROUGH II v GREENMOUNT II

It was a different story for the thirds, who grabbed a coupon-busting victory against league leaders Haslingden thirds at Bentgate on Saturday.

Led by stand-in skipper Matthew Gilmore, and without a win all season, the Mount were good value for their ten run triumph.

Haslingden won the toss and put the villagers in and mainly thanks to a fine unbeaten 60 from Tom Clarke ran up 159 for 5 from their reduced 36 overs.

Also in the runs were Rion Dalugoda (27), Stuart Leach (22 not out) and Dixon (17).

Haslingden were bowled out for 149 with four balls remaining. In the wickets for the Mount were Max Birtwistle (3 for 36); Gilmore (3 for 42) with a wicket apiece for Ed Cunnington and Harry Nuttall.

It was a very positive all-round team performance from the thirds with some fine catching and fielding.

School holidays were heralded with the ultimate damp squib of a weekend after all the recent glorious weather.

Never mind, it’s looking dry this week, so we’re hoping plenty of you will get down to the club to soak in the atmosphere.

Season outlook

We are now into the last third of the season with the seconds and thirds fighting to stay in their respective divisions.

• The first team are looking to finish as high as possible on their return to the Premier Division.
• The top six qualify for next year’s Lancashire Knockout Trophy and we are currently in sixth place.

Greenmount CC are delighted to confirm the return of South African professional Jacques Snyman for the 2027 season.

Jacques will be back for a fifth campaign in the JW Lees Lancashire League where he has amassed more than 5,000 runs, hitting 37 fifties and 14 hundreds – also taking more than 200 wickets.

The next few weeks will be especially exciting as Jacques, and his wife Erin, await the arrival of their second child – meanwhile the on-field excitement and entertainment will definitely carry on for a further season.

Andy Skinner, club chairman, said: “We’re naturally chuffed to secure a player of Jacques’ quality and experience for a further season and wish him and his family all the best for the birth of their new addition!”

Jacques said: “I’ve loved every moment being here, it really has become a second home and I’ll be doing all I can to get the team to the next level of development.”

Greenmount’s next home match is on Sunday at home to Littleborough.

Greenmount first eleven made it five wins from their last six games with a seven wicket victory over visitors Darwen on Saturday.

The victory raises them to fifth in the Lancashire League Premier Division table and raises hopes of qualification for the Lancashire Knockout competition in 2027 (top six qualify).

Darwen batted first and were dismissed for 120 with Amal Dalugoda (4 for 24) and Callum Hunter (3 for 23) the visiting side’s tormentors-in-chief, while there was a wicket apiece for skipper Travis Townsend, Ishy Patel and professional Jacques Snyman.

In the Greenmount reply, Snyman was again at his big-hitting best blasting 66 including six fours and five sixes.

Townsend, unbeaten on 27 and Cameron Mapstone (15 not out) saw the Mount over the line in the 21st over for another crucial 12 points.

GREENMOUNT v DARWEN SCOREBOARD

It was a different tale for the second team who made the reverse trip to face Darwen’s second string at the Brookhouse Aerospace Birch Hall ground.

Oli Dixon’s men went down to an 114-run defeat.

Darwen’s total of 188 for 8 proved too much for the Mount who were dismissed for 74 in the run chase.

Danny Hornby, Ryan Senior and Oli Dixon took two wickets each in the first innings with both Rion Dalugoda and Dexter Crowther getting one.

Only three Greenmount players reached double figures from their innings: Tom Clarke (18), Ryan Senior (16) and Liam Riley (16).
